Abstract: The ability to craft with high-temperature fire was an essential part of Angkor’s rise to power in mainland Southeast Asia. Stoneware ceramics and bloomery iron technologies played central roles in the generation of Khmer identity through the distribution of distinctive glazed wares and as tools to help build and shape their iconic temples. Recent discoveries of kiln and smelting sites, including the first furnaces, have allowed researchers to document the nature and evolution of these two pyrotechnologies across Angkor’s territories. This chapter presents an overview of stoneware and iron production, emphasising chronological shifts in production and the sources of technical innovations that allowed the Khmer to mass produce these commodities. Examining these industries together provides a more holistic understanding of the importance of these goods and their relationship to the historical trajectories of the Angkorian Empire.
